Active Faults GIS Files

Basic Information
Author:
Jessica Czajkowski
Description:
The records within this dataset represent faults with known or suspected Quaternary (<1,600,000 yrs) activity in the state of Washington. These records make up a feature class that is part of a geodatabase that contains data on seismogenic features in Washington State. Other feature classes are active_fold, earthquake_location, and excavation_trench. Data were gathered from numerous sources, including the Washington State portion of the U.S Geological Survey's "Quaternary fault and fold database of the United States" (USGS, 2010). Faults were attributed with information such as age, visibility, method of detection, and in most cases, the corresponding ID number for the fault in the USGS database, for easy correlation between the two data sources. This dataset contains multiple interpretations of the same faults or fault systems by different authors, which may be only partially co-located. Differing interpretations are the result of different methods used to detect the faults and the scale of the investigation. Care should be used with this dataset to ensure full understanding of the scope of past work and breadth of interpretation of the fault of interest.

California Active Faults

Basic Information
Author:
California Geological Survey
Description:
This spreadsheet is a compilation of Active Fault features compiled by the California Geological Survey, published as a Web feature service for the National Geothermal Data System. The document contains 7 worksheets, including information about the template, instructions on using the template, notes related to revisions of the template, Resource provider information, the data, a field list (data mapping view) and a worksheet with vocabularies for use in populating the spreadsheet (data valid terms). Each feature in an active fault data set (row in this spreadsheet) should be characterized by a unique combination of name, URI, geologic history, slip, locatability and orientation properties, as well as being physically connected or inferred to be connected in the Earth. For mapped active faults ,which are the scope of this scheme, the deformation style is assumed to be brittle (as opposed to ductile). Fields in the data table include FeatureURI, Name, FullName, ParentFeatureURI, Label, Description, Symbol, OtherID, SpecificationURI, FeatureType, GeologicHistory, RepresentativeAgeURI, YoungerAgeURI, OlderAgeURI, IntervalSinceMovement, Shape, ObservationMethod, PositionAccuracyMeters, PositionAccuracy, Displacement, SlipRate, SlipAccumulationInterval, MovementType, MovementSense, DipDirection, DateMostRecentEvent, RecurrenceInterval, TotalSlip, Source and MetadataURI.

AASG Geothermal Data: Quaternary (Active) Fault template

Basic Information
Author:
AASG Geothermal data project
Author:
Richard, Stephen M.
Author:
Matti, Jordan
Description:
This document-like information object is the content schema for describing active fault features. Note that fault features require a geometry field that contains the geographic location of the fault trace (typically named 'shape' in ESRI feature classes). The actual template for deploying services must be a GIS feature class, thus cannot be implemented as an Excel spreadsheet. Design is focused on faults portrayed as line segments. The content model is based on the GeoSciML thematic view for ShearDisplacementStructure (see https://www.seegrid.csiro.au/wiki/bin/view/CGIModel/GeoSciMLThematicViewModel), extended with some convenience properties specific to young fault structures. Active in this context denotes that there is compelling evidence of fault displacement during the Quaternary. The version 1.2 content model has been reviewed by NGDS project technical teams and the normative version is now at : http://www.geothermaldata.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=s81mQBojfLo%3d&tabid=444&mid=1271

Access Statement:
This resource provides a template for compilation of data for submission to the AASG Geothermal Data project. Check to see that it is the most current version before using.
Lineage Statement:
At version 1.2 split the 'template' as a feature class in an ESRI Personal Geodatabase, and the content model documentation in the Excel workbook does not include shape fields and is informative only. Version 1.2 has been reviewed by NGDS technical teams and normative version is now at http://www.geothermaldata.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=s81mQBojfLo%3d&tabid=444&mid=1271. Version 1.5 has been revised and edited by AASG project team and should be considered a draft as of 3/2/2012.
